New Icebreaker Ideas for Events That Actually Get People Talking

We've reimagined the traditional icebreaker, and it's already changing how our events start.

It's nobody's favourite moment at a conference, turning to the stranger next to you and introducing yourself with an interesting fact. It's forgettable, and it puts people on the back foot before the day has even started.

Good icebreakers do the opposite. They take the edge off walking into a room full of strangers, start genuine conversations, and they set the tone for how the rest of the event feels. When people arrive with an easy reason to talk to someone, the room warms up fast, and that energy carries straight through to the first session.

At Lime Events we've been putting a fresh spin on this, swapping the "hi, I'm so-and-so and I work at..." routine for activations that get people talking without anyone noticing they've been icebroken at all.

Quote Cards That Do the Talking

At a recent conference we pulled quotes straight from delegate registration forms, printed them onto cards, and placed one on every seat. On arrival, each guest’s job was to find the person behind their quote.

There was no facilitator standing up the front, no "turn to your neighbour" moment, and no forced small talk. Just people comparing cards and striking up conversations they wouldn't have had otherwise. By the time the first speaker took the stage, the room was already warm.

A Drop Box To Boost Engagement

For a recent Waikato Ambitious Middle panel event, we ran a different version of the same idea. On arrival at the event there was a station where around 50 delegates could answer a question card tied to the panel topic ‘business mistakes, and what they taught the people who made them.’

During the session, the MC read a selection of the anonymous answers aloud, and the room lit up. Suddenly everyone had a story to trade, and those conversations kept going long after the panel wrapped.

Steal the Idea

Both of these activations worked because they took the guesswork out of starting a conversation. Once someone's found their card, or heard their answer read out loud, they realise they're not the only one who's been there. That shared experience gives people something to talk about that can be worth a lot more than a name and a title.

If you're planning your next event and want to swap the awkward icebreaker for something with a bit more zest, get in touch with the team at Lime Events.
